Getting Ready for Malta and More 2018!

We are getting ready for our spring trip to Malta, Amalfi Coast, Naples and London.  We leave on March 5 and arrive in Valletta, the capital of Malta, on March 6.  We will be in Valletta until March 11 and then head to the nearby island of Gozo for two nights and then back to Valletta for another two nights.  We are very lucky that this year Valletta is the European Capital of Culture- lots of cultural events and a new food market and new restaurants and cafes to explore.  It will still be early in the season, so it will not be too busy.

We then fly to Naples on March 15, but immediately head off to Positano on the Amalfi coast where we will be until  March 19.

Then, it's a short bus trip to Ravello, where we will be staying until March 22.

We then fly to Naples, where we will be staying for six nights.

On March 28, we head off to London, where we have rented an apartment in Shoreditch (East London), an area we had stayed in when we were there in 2016.

We fly back to Toronto on April 3.

We look forward to you joining us on our journey.  Our first posting from Valletta, will most likely be on Wednesday March 7.

All roads lead to Pompeii

Monday March 26 was mainly cloudy with a bit of sun and a high of 14C.  Our destination was Pompeii. We walked to the train station to catch the 11:11 a.m. train.  On the way, we saw that a small square off Via Tribunale (the main street perpendicular to the street we are staying on) was being readied for the film shoot for the RAI (Italian network) and HBO miniseries of Elena Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend .  The series will be in Italian with English subtitles and should be on the air later in 2018. Getting the square to look like the 1950s Old Salumeria sign Old potato sacks etc. Approaching the Galleria in front of the train station The train was very old, crowded and there were about 20 stops before we got to Pompeii.   However, the trip still only took 40 minutes.  We got the audio guide and a map, that was often frustrating to follow. Flower Market and Fashion and Textile Museum

Sunday April 1 was cloudy with a high of only 8C.  However, there was no rain during the day.  We started our day by walking to the Sunday Columbia Street Flower Market, about a 10 minute walk from our flat. It was a great scene-- tons of people buying plants and flowers and lots of little cafés and bakeries lining the sides of the market area.  The street is blocked off for the weekly market. Tate Britain- Last full day in London

Monday April 2, was yet another cloudy day with a few isolated showers.  The high was 11C.  We walked to the Liverpool Street station to catch the tube to the Tate Britain. Alain and his buddy Good advice We went to see All Too Human: Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life.    The exhibit featured a number of painters in Britain (British and not, but who lived or live in London) who strove to represent human figures, their relationships and surroundings in a very intimate way.  Some of them only ever painted from life.  Others created imagined scenes.  Whatever the approach, this group of artists moved beyond naturalistic representation, capturing the ways in which they are affected by their subjects.
